Before you buy a costume, take a look in your closet. A black jacket, an old T-shirt, and a little makeup might be all you need.
AI can help you turn those basics into a Halloween look, figure out what’s missing, and walk you through putting it together. Bring your own ideas, too—a favorite character, an unusual color, or a homemade prop can make the outfit feel like yours.
Open an AI chat that supports image generation. Follow these three steps in the same conversation, replacing the brackets with your details.
Step 1: Create three costume ideas
Tell the AI what you own, who the costume is for, and your spending limit. Include accessories and craft supplies as well as clothes.
Create 3 easy DIY Halloween costumes using what I already own.
My clothes and supplies: [List items.]
Extra budget per costume: [Amount and currency, or zero.]
For: [Adult or child.]
My preferred style or idea: [Optional.]Reuse my items, stay within budget, and avoid sewing or damaging clothes. Use distinctive makeup and simple props to make each look unmistakably Halloween-themed. Keep the details affordable and easy to recreate.
Generate one realistic image showing 3 full-body looks side by side, each labeled in English. Add pumpkins and orange-purple lighting, but keep the people and outfits clearly visible. Each costume should be recognizable without the background.
Then briefly list the items I can reuse and any extras needed for each look.
Not sure what to list? Here’s an example:
Clothes and supplies: A black T-shirt, black jeans, a black jacket, black sneakers, sunglasses, and cardboard.
Extra budget per costume: $10.
For: An adult woman.
Preferred style: Spooky but stylish—perhaps a vampire, a ghost, or a skeleton.
Choose the look you like best. Check that it uses clothes you actually own and that the extras sound manageable before moving on.

Step 2: Pick a look and make it yours
Now’s the time to change the makeup, add a personal detail, or swap a tricky prop for something simpler.
I choose [costume name].
I’d like to add my own touch: [Optional idea.]
I have [time] to get ready for [event].Refine this costume and list what I already have, plus anything I need to buy or borrow. Include supplies for making the props, estimated costs, and free alternatives. Keep the total within my budget.
For example:
“I choose the vampire. I’d like a small spiderweb detail beside one eye. I have 45 minutes to get ready for a friend’s Halloween party.”
A small change can give the whole outfit personality. Check actual prices before buying anything, and ask the AI to simplify the plan if the total comes out too high.
Step 3: Put it together
Once you’re happy with the outfit and supply list, ask for instructions you can follow while getting ready.
Give me short, numbered steps to put this costume together, including props, clothing, and makeup. List the materials and estimated preparation time.
Stick to our agreed plan and budget without adding new purchases. Avoid sewing or damaging clothes, and use removable attachments. Make sure I can walk, sit, and see comfortably.
Lay out your supplies, make the props, then get dressed and do your makeup. Before heading out, walk around and sit down to check that everything stays in place.
For children’s costumes, an adult should handle sharp tools and check that accessories fit securely.
Change your mind? Keep going.
Maybe a prop takes too long, the makeup feels too complicated, or you come up with something better halfway through. Continue in the same chat:
Here’s what isn’t working, or what I’d like to change: [Describe it.]
Adjust the costume using what I already have. Keep the personal details I like and explain only what needs to change.
You don’t have to follow the first plan exactly. Add a favorite color, a handmade accessory, or a detail your friends will recognize. Those choices are often what make a costume memorable.
Give everything one last check, grab your keys, and have a happy Halloween!
